What does the published scientific research say about Clostridium pasteurianum?
In a wastewater bioreactor study (PMID 32083474), C. pasteurianum dominated the microbial community at 19% of the bacterial population and the system fixed nitrogen at 11.8 mg N L⁻¹ day⁻¹; the authors cite the resulting biomass as a candidate biofertilizer. A separate soil study (PMID 21755289) isolated the organism from wetland ultisol alongside other NFB, and reported it exhibited greater hydrocarbon-degradation capacity than several co-isolated nitrogen fixers — though crude-oil contamination sharply reduced NFB populations overall.
A potato-production field trial (PMID 33915396) evaluated nitrogen-fixing microbe (NFM) products alongside urease and nitrification inhibitors, finding that NFM applied alone increased N₂O emissions by 23% in one season, while co-application with the nitrification inhibitor DMPSA reversed that effect. No approved biostimulant claims or EPA registrations for C. pasteurianum appear in this data set.
